Second Car Boot Sale

Yes thats right we are keen beans atm and went to our 2nd car boot sale in 7 days!

So this time there were fewer of us, however the car was still bursting at the seams with goodies.  Being more experienced this time we arrived at 6am for an supposed 6.30 set up time, and just as we polished off our bacon sandwiches were allowed to set up from 6.15am.

So with a better pitch this time we began to unload (I will add that it was very dark and cold at this point.)  There were the usual onlookers at the beginning and requests for electrical items (we still had none), however the teamwork was sublime and we were good to go in no time.  It is also worth stating here that Izzy and Josie have no idea what the fuss about the clothes rack was last week.  Even with some screws missing and on the spot improvisation (see pictures on flickr), the rack went up in no time - the clothes looked so professional it could have been a rail in Selfridges!

Constant snacking and drinking of tea ensued over the next 5 hours and in total we raised just short of £90.  This added to last week's total means that in seven days we have raised £180 - lets hope we can keep this momentum going.

The car boot season is now drawing to a close, not least because we are all off to uni and therefore all over the country until Christmas, however there will be other fundraising events in the interval so keep checking back for more details.

Its been a brilliant few weeks for Challenge 521.  We have booked our expedition, started fundraising, sorted out technical details and have plans for future fundraising events - fingers crossed that by this time next year we will have successfully completed our challenge.

More updates soon ...

Car Boot Sale

Our first attempt at fundraising was a car boot sale on Sunday. We went to Taplow, ready for a 10.00 start, thinking we were going to be super organised and at least have some time to set up before the buyers arrived. We were unpleasantly surprised, however, to find that we were one of the last cars to arrive and were definitely some of the least experienced car booters! Our cars were, quite literally, pounced on by people wanting to buy our stuff, or enquire whether we had much electrical equipment (?!) After the initial shock, we managed to get a good system going, with Josie and Amy passing goods out of the cars, Alice being in charge of selling and I was attempting (somewhat successfully) to put up the Ikea clothes rail. Once we were all set up, we really got into the swing of things - Alice was definitely the star seller (superb haggling skills), while Amy and Josie had a good line in testing and advertising products (especially if they involved squirting water at unassuming passersby!).

We managed to sell a lot of our wares, even a roll of half-used sellotape for the grand total of 5p! After the hectic start, it all started to wind down in the afternoon so once we were satisified with our efforts, we started to pack up what was left of our stall. The infamous clothes rail proved to be slightly tricky to take down, however with Amy on the case, at least it was an amusing ordeal! Somehow, despite the swearing, falling over and hysterical laughter, we fnally managed to dismantle the clothes rail and get back in our cars to head home.

The grand total of our efforts was a worthy £94- not a bad start to our fundraising campaign. Josie and Izzy are off to another car boot sale this weekend, hoping to improve on our total and get rid of some more stuff. Unfortunately for Izzy and Josie, this next one has a 6.30 start, so Good Luck ladies!

Getting Started.....

Ok so here we are first blog!  Still not 100% sure how to use this, but we are now online and in more ways that one.

Should you want to you can also follow 5:21's progress on:

and

So how did 5:21 come about and what is it's purpose?  Basically there are five of us involved in this challenge; Alice Baker, Isabelle Brown, Poppy Ilderton, Amy Kunicki and Josie Woodhams.  The five of us all live in and around Reading and are all now students at various universities.  Most importantly we all used to swim for our local swimming clubs, and decided over the summer just gone (2011) that it would be great to pick up our swimming fitness again.  This clearly was not enough however, and so to challenge ourselves even further we decided to swim the English Channel.  In fairness I think it was Amy who first came up with the idea, but all of us jumped right on board (no pun intended) and we are now in the process of preparing for our goal.  Although we have to raise £3000 in order to swim the channel we are also doing it for Cancer Research UK, and any money raised in excess of £3000 will be donated to this worthwhile cause.

This blog will be updated with news of our progress, problems we encounter and will give you the chance to get further involved with 5:21 (5 people : 21 miles).  In this diary like fashion we hope to be able to keep in contact and keep a record of everything that we hope to achieve over the next 12 months.

So there was a quick hello from us and explanation as to who we are and what we are doing.  Please feel free to contact us if you want any more information via our email address challenge521@hotmail.co.uk

Until next time...
